  • Masses in the neck can be extremely dangerous - even life-threatening!  They may be cancerous, or they may close off the breathing passage.  Neck masses may be any of the following:

    • Congenital cysts or masses

    • Thyroid masses (benign or malignant)

    • Infections in lymph nodes

    • Tuberculosis

    • Abscesses (pockets of pus)

    • Enlarged salivary glands

    • Neoplasms (benign or malignant)

    • Metastatic carcinoma (cancer spread to neck from other sites)

  • If a neck mass is present, see your physician immediately.  In general:

    • Masses due to infection are often painful and/or tender.

    • Masses due to congenital causes are not painful unless they become infected.

    • Cancers (or metastases) generally are not painful.

  • Neck masses that do not respond to conservative treatment, such as antibiotics and warm compresses, within 5-7 days should be evaluated by an otolaryngologist.

    • Your otolaryngologist will perform a complete head and neck examination, including endoscopy of the nose, throat, and larynx (voice box).

    • Computerized tomography and/or an MRI will probably be ordered.

    • If a tumor is suspected, most likely a fine needle aspiration biopsy will be performed.  This involves numbing the skin over the mass and withdrawing cells with a syringe and needle.

    • Excision of the mass (removing by surgery) should be the last diagnostic procedure if the source cannot be found.  If the mass is a cancer, excision of the mass may result in decreased survival.
