Dr. Hazenfield -- Ear, Nose, and Throat Doctor in Hawaii

Healthy Noses & Sinuses

Hugh N. Hazenfield, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Avoid the following environmental factors to keep your nose and sinuses healthy:

  • Smoking (tobacco and recreational drugs, including marijuana)

  • Decongestant nasal sprays, such as oxymetazoline

  • Overuse of cold and allergy medications which contain decongestants such as pseudephedrine (Sudafed)

  • Extremely dry air

  • Toxic fumes

  • Aerosols, including hair spray

  • Smoke

  • Dust

  • Asbestos

  • Cocaine

Use the following:

  • Saline nasal spray in dry conditions (such as Las Vegas casinos) and during air flights longer than one hour

  • Filtering masks when exposed to dust, airborne dirt, sawdust, or metal filings

  • New air conditioning filters every two months (or clean monthly)

  • A small amount of bleach in your humidifier, and clean the humidifier frequently

  • Since most of us live with open windows, air filters are of very little value in Hawaii.

Consult your physician or an otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat doctor) if any of the following symptoms occur:

  • Persistent nasal congestion or blockage, especially on just one side of your nose.

  • Nose bleeds (epistaxis).

  • Yellow or green discharge or pus from your nose.

  • Constant or frequent post-nasal drip.

  • Decreased or absent sense of smell.

  • Smelling odors that are not present.

  • Facial pain and/or swelling.

  • Visible masses in your nose.

  • Frequent sneezing.

  • Swelling of your eyelids

My offices are in the following convenient locations:
